Of those who experience and report sexual assault, males are 10% of all victims. Males are some of the most under-representated and under-served populations when it comes to sexual assault, especially because of harmful social norms which shame men in to believing it was their fault and that they should never ever tell anyone. This only prevents men from seeking and receiving the support they need. Something I discuss with all survivors is the need for you to take the reins of power back from your perpetrator, invigorate the life force within you, and start guiding your own life. If you or someone you know has been a victim of sexual assault, reach out to a healthcare provider and seek support. You CAN regain power. Call Rosara Torrisi at 516-690-6770. This is a link to a BuzzFeed article wherein 25 men speak out about their sexual assault through the use of written words and photography. It is powerfully moving.
